What does that mean?

The Keystone STARS is a responsive system to improve, support, and recognize the continuous quality improvement efforts of early learning programs in Pennsylvania.

Keystone STARS has four primary goals:

  • To improve the quality of early care and education

  • To support early care and education providers in meeting their quality improvement goals

  • To recognize programs for continuous quality improvement and meeting higher quality standards

  • To provide families a way to choose a quality early care and education program

Keystone STARS rates child care programs from one to four STARS on thing you care about. Centers get rated on things like staff education, learning environment, inclusion of families & community, and center management. Our 4 star score, which is the highest that can be earned, ensures our center is providing quality early educaction for your child.

our approach

The John Heinz Child Development Center embraces the use of the Creative Curriculum, as well as the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards. The Creative Curriculum is a scientifically based, comprehensive curriculum for programs serving children from birth to age 5. Below are some of the highlights of our approach.

  • Encourages social-emotional development

  • Activities to develop literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies

  • Support for English language learners, children with special needs, and accelerated learners in the program

  • Exposure to extracurricular activities such as: computer/iPad, violin, music, Spanish language, special guests & activities

YounG Toddlers

Children 12 to 24 months of age receive a 5:1 child to staff ratio. This classroom provides a safe environment for students to learn and play. Children will work on continuing to improve communication skills and develop further thinking and reasoning skills.

Older Toddlers

Older Toddlers consist of students between 2 and 3 years old. The room uses a 6:1 child to staff ratio and is an area they can play and learn while still offering quiet choices throughout their days.

Preschool

Preschool room is where children between 3 and 5 years old learn and develop. In this room there will always be at least 1 staff member per every 10 children.  The preschool curriculum will focus on developing each child's increasing independence, and expand on their social skills and knowledge.

Toddler 1
